About

Massiel Carrillo is an Ecuadorian visual artist and educator whose interdisciplinary practice investigates the entanglements of body, nature, and language through a queer-feminist lens. Working with organic materials ranging from plant matter to raw textures, she creates installations, performances, videos, and experimental sculptures that explore the symbolic and physical layers of the body. Their work draws on feminist science fiction and critical theory to challenge fixed ideas of identity, gender, and what is considered “natural.” By confronting and deconstructing the category of “woman,” Carrillo opens up space for more fluid and nuanced understandings of the self and the environment.

Carrillo earned a degree in Visual Arts from the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), where they are also represented in the Q Gallery collection. Their artistic trajectory has been recognized with several awards, including an Honorable Mention at the Brazil Award in 2022 and Second Place - Acquisition Award at BUAM in 2021. They have participated in numerous residencies and group exhibitions in Ecuador, Colombia, and Spain, and are currently undertaking the Culterim Residency in Berlin, Germany, expanding their research on the relationships between the body, territory, and speculative futures.
