‘An Overwhelming Event: The New Renaissance’ is a month-long solo exhibition by Ghanaian artist Jeffrey Otoo to be held at FCA-Ghana Studio 1 in Jamestown, Accra, from December 27, 2024, until January 27, 2025. The exhibition announces Otoo’s painterly paraphrasings of Biblical, popular, and mythical allegories and fables depicted on conventional, as well as shaped, canvases plus wood boards. “An Overwhelming Event” appropriates its title from the opening song on Jay Electronica’s debut album ‘A Written Testimony’ released in 2020. Inspired by the dreamy and other-worldly lyrical clarity of the American rapper’s flow on the album—in addition to visual cues to European Old Master techniques, and to the necessity of ecological interdependence evoked by the Butterfly effect—Otoo’s pastiches remix and montage ideas, styles, and forms into an internally coherent system of reality summarized in seven paintings. All are invited to journey with the artist—whose practice encompasses painting, DJing, and fashion—on this excursion.
