About

allery 1957 is excited to announce the solo show of Awanle Ayiboro Hawa Ali, “Fine Feathers Don’t Make Fine Birds,” curated by Nana Yaa Poku Asare-Boadu.

This exhibition marks the culmination of Hawa Ali’s 10-month residency with the gallery, and presents a powerful new body of work exploring the intersection of societal exploitation and the unacknowledged contributions of women, particularly within Ghana’s informal economy.

In her striking depictions of contemporary Ghanaian women, framed by lush Baroque-inspired curtains, Ayiboro challenges colonial histories and the legacies of erasure. The curtains, both luxurious and oppressive, serve as a backdrop to stories of resilience, labor, and survival. Ayiboro’s work speaks to the duality of material wealth and emotional depth, using vibrant tones and intricate textures to highlight the untold stories of those who sustain Accra’s markets and communities. By intertwining the physical with the metaphysical, she offers a poignant reflection on the realities and struggles faced by women in Ghana today.
