About

GHANA 1957: ART AFTER INDEPENDENCE is a precursor to a 2027 exhibition that offers hints into the paradigms, genealogies, and politics which have shaped Ghana’s pre-independence and post-colonial currents in modern art while tracing their local and transnational exchanges. This exhibition also highlights events, personages, narratives, and archives sourced mainly from the National Museum of Ghana as well as the Public Records and Archives Administration Department of Ghana (PRAAD), the Information Services Department of Ghana (ISD) and other private and non-institutional collections. In addition to the objects and information on display, and as part of our generative research strategy for this long-durational project, members of the general public are invited to contribute their knowledge and experience.

We invite you into this process based on premises such as: What do you remember or know about this era? Are there artist names that you think may have been lost to the annals of history? What do you think about when you think about Ghana’s independence? Do you have any articles or artifacts (such as paintings, sculptures, pottery, textiles, books, journals, etc.) related to the research that you may want to share with us?
