About

Gallery 1957 is excited to present “In The Name of Love: Introspection”, a solo exhibition by Nana Bruce, opening in Accra on Thursday, 31st July 2025.

Following his 2023 exhibition with the gallery, this new body of work takes us on a journey through the fragmented self, asking what it truly means to love, beginning first with ourselves. Each painting captures a different moment along that path: uncertainty, confrontation, clarity, or the quiet ache of not yet knowing.
The scenes feel uncomfortably intimate, as though we’ve stepped into private rooms without permission, witnessing something raw and unfiltered. Some figures seem ready to face themselves; others risk losing their way in distraction or denial.

This atmosphere of exposure and vulnerability is heightened by Bruce’s use of shadows, which act as second selves or storytellers—still but charged, they are quiet markers of the truths we conceal, the emotions we suppress, and the questions we avoid. They sit heavily within the work, unmoving yet impossible to ignore.

Bruce’s approach to his subjects is empathetic rather than judgmental. He paints their inner tentions with care, translating fulfilment, pride, desire, doubt, and fear without condemnation. In doing so, he offers not just scenes to observe, but mirrors in which we might recognise ourselves and perhaps begin our own work of Introspection and self-love.

Join us for the opening reception on Thursday 31st July, from 6 to 9pm at Gallery I, Accra.

The exhibition will be on view through 11th September 2025.
