About

María Isabel Rueda was born in Cartagena de Indias, on the Colombian Caribbean coast, and now lives on the same coast, in the town of Puerto Colombia. This has shaped her practice over the last decade as she has explored the specificities of this region. In addition to working as an artist since the late 1990s, Rueda has been an active agent in the Colombian art scene: during the second half of the 2010s, she was part of the now-defunct art space El Bodegón; she co-directed the independent project La Usurpadora in Puerto Colombia, a programme of artistic residencies and curatorial projects at the local and international level, with whom she curated Háganlo mientras sean jóvenes (Do it while you’re young) for the Artecámara section of Artbo in 2017.

In 2019, she was part of the artistic team for the 45th National Artists’ Salon, curating Universos Desdoblados (Unfolded Universes) at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá, and was artistic advisor for the 2022 Venice Biennale: The Milk of Dreams. In 2024, together with Catalina Vargas, she curated Acuerdos con el mundo natural (Agreements with the Natural World) and La asamblea de los seres vivos (The Assembly of Living Beings) at the Fragmentos Arte y Memoria space in Bogotá. In 2021, together with Eliana Hernández, they won the Colombian National Poetry Prize with the book La Mata, a work in which nature is both voice and witness. She is the editor of Tropical Goth magazine and in 2017 curated the exhibition Gótico Tropical, Variaciones de la luz en otras dimensiones (Tropical Gothic, Variations of Light in Other Dimensions) at the Paserelle space for the France-Colombia cross-cultural year. She currently works in the city of Barranquilla with Julián Chams and Juan Betancourt at La Casa de Meira - Centre for Artistic Experimentation in the Colombian Caribbean.
