About

Cheen is a Maya Tz’utujil poet and visual artist from San Pedro La Laguna. Her practice is rooted in the knowledge, spirituality, and lived experience of her community on Lake Atitlán. Since 2008, she has documented her dreams, while working since 2010 to sustain and reactivate ancestral knowledge around medicinal plants. Cheen frequently collaborates with her partner Manuel Chavajay on artworks that bring Mayan cosmology, nature, memory, and communal healing into relation with the collective traumas produced by Guatemala’s genocide (1960-1996). Her work approaches dreams not as private imagery but as a form of knowledge through which relations among bodies, ancestors, plants, water, and territory can be perceived and renewed.
