About

María Leguízamo is a Colombian artist whose sculptural practice seeks out the porous and permeable boundaries between things, people, phenomena, and places. She works with elemental materials such as water, fire, and the voice, employing processes of erosion, corrosion, accumulation, and wear to explore how seemingly minor phenomena can transform, soften, or destabilize the ways in which we organize and understand the world. Her works function as exercises in infiltration, drawing attention to the fractures and vulnerabilities of the structures that contain us. Her recent research reflects a strong interest in the sculptural dimension of the voice and its capacity to erode structures of power.

Leguízamo studied Fine and Visual Arts at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and earned an MFA in Sculpture from Temple University, supported by a Fulbright-MinCultura scholarship. In 2018, she was awarded the Ilya & Emilia Kabakov Fellowship in Sculpture.
