We’re delighted to facilitate an exhibition in Salvador at Pivô Boulevard, guest-curated by Beta–Local from San Juan. In this exhibition, Beta-Local will propose a practice of displacement, incorporation and reactivation of territorialised memories through a series of activations led by artists Jochi Melero, Fabián Vélez, MIMA, Pablo Guardiola, Michael Linares, William Murphy and Julio Caldas.
“There are always all these ingredients—social forces, political forces, economic forces—but sometimes, and somehow, they all come together and make a form of practice, or an institutional structure.”
“In our interactions with cultural institutions that disperse funding, we’d wanted to articulate a different relationship where we as the people who are receiving this funding are able to have more say, rather than always being instrumentalised to fit an agenda.”
“The history of the market has proven to us that artists have not always had the voice to make decisions that are crucial to their own practices.”
“Unlike traditional institutions bound by rigid hierarchies, independent art spaces thrive on experimentation and risk-taking. For these cultural venues, the very idea of what ‘independence’ means can be a source of conflict.”
OtherNetwork is a decentralised cultural institution that connects independent art spaces. At its core are hundreds of projects that are rooted in their local context, responding to the needs of artists directly. We see the term ‘independent’ as fluid and context-specific, and continuously seek to unpack what this means to cultural practitioners in different global localities.
